Since my childhood in rural Australia – taking joy in helping my father on the farm, and absorbing a love for nourishing, home-cooked food from my mother – I’ve been passionate about caring for others.
I found my calling as a Doula through reflecting on my own experiences as a parent of four. From the trepidation of anticipating childbirth, to the exhaustion of the early days of mothering, from the amazing highs of hearing my babies babble and laugh to the devastating low of losing a much-wanted child at 22 weeks of pregnancy, those months were some of the best, and worst, of my life.
I often think that having a calm, caring person to be my lighthouse through those stormy times would have been a blessing, and that’s what I now strive to be for every family I work with, whatever their circumstances.
As both an experienced mother and an experienced birthing partner, I view the last weeks of pregnancy and the first weeks of a child’s life as an amazing opportunity to lay foundations for positive parent/child relationships for many years to come. Encouraging and empowering mums and dads during this special time is my heart’s work.

Why Use a Doula?
A doula doesn’t take the place of hospital staff or family, but studies have shown that the addition of a doula to your birthing team can result in:
- Fewer requests for epidurals and pain medication
- Reduced use of forceps or vacuum in delivery
- Reduced need for inductions & augmentation
- Shorter labour lengths
- Increased rates of breastfeeding at 6 weeks postpartum
- Reduced anxiety and depression at 6 weeks postpartum
All of these factors contribute to the longer term health of both baby and mum.

Alison Hansen Doula – providing birth and postpartum support for mothers in the north and northwest areas of Sydney.
Women have supported one another through pregnancy and childbirth for thousands of years. As a Doula I carry on this priceless tradition by passing on maternal experience and providing emotional, physical, and educational support during late pregnancy and the birthing process, for both the mum and her partner. I will be with you the whole time suggesting effective relaxation and breathing techniques and offering reassurance and therapeutic massage.
I like to meet with my clients a few months before the baby’s due date in order to build a trusting relationship in which parents are free to ask questions and express arising fears and concerns. With a focus on clear communication and positivity we will build a holistic birth plan that suits your lifestyle and needs. Regardless of the type of birth you want – whether it is a home birth or hospital birth, whether you want pain relief, or a water birth, I will ensure that you are set up for a positive birthing experience.
Packages for Birth Support start at $1,500.
The switch from pregnancy to postpartum can be overwhelming. You’ve been waiting for the baby for so long and now it’s here and you are filled with confusion and self-doubt. This is where a postpartum doula comes in.
As a postnatal doula, I offer practical, emotional and social support to new mothers and their partners, assisting with the breastfeeding process and encouraging bonding between your newest arrival and the rest of your family. I can help families create rosters and care plans to help you adjust to your new responsibilities while ensuring you are finding time to care for yourselves. If you have older children I can also help you with caring for them and their adjustment to the new arrival. And if your extended family needs a little ‘wrangling’ I can do that too.
During this time it is common for mothers to experience postpartum depression or the baby blues. As a postnatal doula I have experience in recognising the difference between what may be normal exhaustion and anxiety and something more serious. I can work with parents to find the expert help they need early.
Postpartum Support Packages start at $500 for 8 hours, additional hours $75.
Sleep Support Doula
Sleep is an essential part of welcoming a baby into your lives, but it can be difficult. After the birth or hospital stay, mums are often exhausted and struggle to find the energy to set up a routine amidst constant visits from friends and family, and the demands of daily life. As a baby doula, I can come to your home and help care for your new baby and home, while you get some much-needed rest.
In the following weeks, I can help you work through your baby’s fussy times and begin to establish appropriate sleep routines. From 2 months, I can help you design more regimented sleep plans and support you with sleep coaching to ensure you and your baby are getting enough sleep.
Packages for assisted Sleep Support start at $750.
Baby Massage Classes
Baby Massage will not only help strengthen the wonderful parent/child bond, but it can provide some real health benefits, to both baby and parent. Massage increases the release of a wide range of good hormones in your baby, but
also reduces the release of stress hormones. It can also reduce the symptoms of conditions like colic, reflux and wind. All of which leads to a calmer more settled baby.
Your baby is only little for such a very short time, so it is important to make sure you do all you can to bond with baby as much as possible. Massaging your baby will help set you up for a close and trusting relationship throughout their childhood and teen years.
In my Baby Massage Classes I will teach you how and when to massage your baby, using different techniques for different concerns. By the end of the class you will feel confident that whether you want to relieve colic, settle your baby, or just spend some precious bonding time together, you have the skills and knowledge you need.
The cost for a group class is $40 each and $180 for one on one. If you would like to book a class or one on one training please get in touch.
